Our mission is to assure a full measure of justice for those in need. We provide a wide range of civil legal assistance to eligible low-income persons in the Charlotte metropolitan area and west-central NC.

ChildHelp USA hotline 800-4-A-CHILD Provides multilingual crisis intervention and professional counseling on child abuse and domestic violence issues. Gives referrals to local agencies offering counseling and other services related to child abuse,adult survivor issues, and domestic violence. Provides literature on child abuse in English and Spanish.

704-372-7961 Monday through Friday — 8:30 AM -5 PM Delinquency Defense: We serve as the public defender for children in Mecklenburg County, giving a voice to children in court and ensuring that their constitutional and statutory rights are protected.
Mental Health Representation: We represent every child facing civil commitment to a psychiatric hospital or residential treatment facility in Mecklenburg County.
Custody Advocacy: We are court-appointed to represent the best interests of children who are caught in the middle of high-conflict, contested custody cases.
Guardian ad Litem: We serve as the guardian ad litem for children who enter Youth and Family Services (YFS) custody through delinquency court.
Special Education Representation: Through referrals from Juvenile Court and community partners, we represent parents to protect the special education rights of their children with disabilities and, when necessary, file disability discrimination complaints to vindicate those rights.
Research and Policy: We use client-level data, coupled with publicly available data, research on “what works,” and advocacy expertise, to inform organizational, legislative, and practice policy.
Community Engagement and Awareness: We provide information, resources, and training to families and local agencies on children’s rights and advocacy

Provides legal assistance to low-income persons in civil matters [non-criminal matters] We provide free legal help to low-income North Carolinians in civil cases involving basic human needs like safety, shelter, income and more.

We do not handle criminal cases or civil cases on behalf of prisoners. We do not handle personal injury cases or traffic cases. We do not handle divorce, alimony, spousal support and equitable distribution cases except in extraordinary circumstances (learn about our free do-it-yourself divorce clinics​). We do not handle immigration cases except those involving domestic violence and human trafficking. We do not handle new applications for government benefits.​
